Over the holidays in 1996, Uncle Pete told the story of Great-Grandma Livia, the matchmaker. (That’s Livia pictured at left with Great-Grandpa John in 1959). Turns out that back in 1948, Livia had borrowed a silver platter from her neighbors across the street, the Faillaces. Now Livia knew that her nephew, Pete, had a crush on young Jennie Faillace.

One night when I was ten years old, my parents brought their then-new video camera over to my grandparents’ house. My dad set up the briefcase-sized Panasonic on a tripod in the living room and aimed it at the dining table in the neighboring room. Around that table sat my three living grandparents.
