Kevin Clash

Puppeteer

"I'm 43 years old, I'm a Black man. I'm six feet tall, 170 pounds. I mean, they would never think that I perform this little red monster on 'Sesame Street.' They can't connect it."

About This Interview

Puppeteer Kevin Clash was interviewed for two hours at the Sesame Workshop in New York, NY.  Clash talked about his early appearances in Baltimore on local station WMAR.  He described how he came to be involved with Jim Henson and his muppets through puppet designer Kermit Love. He then spoke in great detail about his work on Sesame Street and the characters he performs, most notably "Elmo."  The interview was conducted by Karen Herman on July 20, 2004.

Kevin Clash is amazing. I highly recommend you go watch his documentary "Being Elmo: A PUPPETEER'S JOURNEY", it is on Netflix. I gave it five starts.

TERRIFIC INTERVIEW. A good look into the Muppet world. I especially liked the part at the end on how Elmo was operated. TVLEGENDS, you did it again. Take a buck outa' petty cash!!!

When my mother took me along on Saturdays to Brager-Gutman's department store at Lexington and Park Avenue to buy fabric for clothes that she made for her tallest second eldest girl - me; I waited outside and watched Kevin Clash doing his puppet shows in front of the store. The crowd grew larger each week, and I never forgot him. I, too, was a shy teen (7 years older than he) who had creative juices of my own. So, I've looked for his journey through my own lifetime via the news and articles. I'm thrilled with this film, and that everyone will know about his greatness. Beautiful!!!
